The PACE Environmental Business Plan Competition encourages hands-on, experiential learning through the development of a written plan for a business that helps solve an environmental issue and a pitch to adults familiar with business enterprises.

In 2020 the project was expanded to encourage students to find ways to give back to their community during a pandemic. Lauryn Hong, Ella Matlock, Sofia Migliazza, and Erin Rogers created the “Be the Change Coloring Co.” Their business was able to raise $21,000 for charities including Miller’s Children’s Hospital, Black Lives Matter, Long Beach Rescue Mission and LA Housing Authority.

Government and economics with the business plan at the end of the year was incredibly useful for the future. Especially the economics part that I essentially knew nothing about before this class. Learning how to run a real business as a teenager was a fun process. I learned so much about how to handle taxes and to reasonably and effectively price your products, and to handle a large demand. Running a business was such a new addition to our lives as students in PACE, but I learned so much from this experience.

Our business taught me about teamwork and marketing. I had never really worked with a team on something longer than a week or two for a school project, and this business really taught me what it means to work on a team, consider everyone’s ideas, and work together towards a shared goal. We had to learn about marketing in order to get our product out in the world, and it was fun and interesting to learn about how to target specific audiences and try to get them to buy our product. I really enjoyed the business plan project because it forced me to think outside of the box and we ended up creating something really great!!
